Microneedling - you should definitely pay attention to this

Microneedling: Everything You Need to Know

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as mesotherapy, involves creating intentional micro-injuries to the skin using a dermaroller or dermapen equipped with fine needles. These needles puncture the top layer of the skin, signaling the body to repair what it perceives as an injury.

This triggers the skin's natural healing process, leading to the production of collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin:

  • Collagen: Strengthens the connective tissue
  • Hyaluronic acid: Helps retain moisture
  • Elastin: Maintains the skin’s elasticity

These combined effects can address various skin issues such as pigmentation, stretch marks, scars, and other skin concerns. Sounds great, doesn’t it?

Is Microneedling Effective?

Microneedling can deliver visible results, but it often requires multiple expensive sessions. Keep in mind that it involves intentional skin injury, so caution is essential.

In some countries, including Germany, there are no strict regulations on who can perform microneedling. Many beauticians offer this as a standard service, but it’s critical to ensure they are well-trained and use products specifically certified for microneedling. Using non-sterile or inappropriate products can lead to complications.

❗ Important: Always verify the products and certifications used by your practitioner.

Microneedling is best performed by professionals, but since dermarollers are readily available for purchase, many opt to perform the procedure at home to save costs. If you decide to do so, follow these guidelines:

Home Microneedling: Key Points to Consider

  1. Choose the right needle length: For home use, stick to dermarollers with needle lengths between 0.1mm and 0.5mm. Lengths beyond 0.75mm should only be handled by professionals.
  2. Disinfect thoroughly: After every session, disinfect the dermaroller and store it in a sterile container.
  3. Allow healing time: Your skin needs time to recover between sessions. Depending on the needle length and area treated, this can range from 1-2 weeks.
  4. Ensure product quality: Cheap dermarollers often have blunt or uneven needles, which can cause severe skin irritation or infections. Always purchase certified dermarollers from reputable brands.
  5. Do not share your dermaroller: Sharing can transmit diseases like HIV or other infections. Use your dermaroller exclusively.
